ELECTROCOMPANIET ECM-1 MK II DAC / STREAMER

Congratulations on being the proud new owner of an Electrocompaniet ECM-1 MKII DAC / Streamer. Now that you've got your new ECM-1 setup and you've finished installing a hard drive inside, lets load it up with all your favorite audio files. The engineers at Electrocompaniet have made it extremely simple and convenient to transfer all the music files you love to the ECM-1. Let's get started...

HOW TO TRANSFER AUDIO FILES FROM YOUR WINDOWS PC TO THE ELECTROCOMPANIET ECM-1

Once a user installs a hard drive into the ECM-1, it should automatically appear as a Network Attached Storage device or NAS, as it's more commonly called. This allows users of the ECM-1 to conveniently transfer audio files over your wireless or wired home network to the ECM-1's internal hard drive from your PC.

Step 1 - Click on the folder icon located on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen [SEE IMAGE 1, Arrow 1]

Step 2 - Click on the the network icon located at the bottom of the left panel of the newly opened window [SEE IMAGE 1, Arrow 2]

Step 3 - Double click on the the icon that looks like a blue computer called ECM-1213 (the numbers after ECM may appear different) [SEE IMAGE 1, Arrow 3]. For the purpose of this tutorial disregard any other icons that have ECM in their name.

NOTE: If your ECM-1 does not appear in the network window described above try re-booting your PC and start again. If it still does not appear then it's likely that a setting in Windows, that Microsoft recently disabled, needs to be re-enabled. Scroll down this page to watch a video tutorial on how to enable the needed setting. Once you've completed the steps shown in the video re-boot your PC and the EMC-1 by turning off the main power switch on the rear, waiting 30 seconds and then turning it back on. Once completed, start again from step 1

Step 4 - Double click on the folder called "Music" [SEE IMAGE 2] - You are now looking at the hard drive you installed in the ECM-1. At this point it will appear blank because we have not copied anything to it yet.

HOW TO COPY AND PASTE YOUR AUDIO FILES

Step 1 - First we need to open a second window. To do this Right click on the folder in the left-hand panel where your music is stored that you wish to transfer. From the pop-up menu, select "open in a new window". You should now have two windows open, the source window where your audio files are currently located and your "Music" window where you are going to transfer your files to.

Step 2 - Select the audio file you wish to transfer by single clicking on it, with the file now highlighted press Ctrl + C on your keyboard at the same time to copy it.

Step 3 - Click on a blank space in the "Music" window you opened previously to select the destination and then Press Ctrl + V on your keyboard at the same time to paste it to the ECM-1's hard drive.

Paste a file

At this point the file should start transferring from your PC to the ECM-1.

TIP: Consult your Windows manual to learn how to copy and paste multiple audio files at once.

NOTE: The speed of the transfer will vary depending on the speed of your network, PC and whether you're using a wired or wireless connection.

One last this to do. Launch the EC app, tap on "Library", then look for the little gear icon in the upper-right hand corner and tap on it. Then click on the big orange "UPDATE LIBRARY" button. When the light stops flashing on the front panel of the ECM-1 your music library is up to date. Tap the back button (arrow pointing to the left) to view your updated library tracks. You can now tap on any album or artist to play your music.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR ECM-1 DOESN'T SHOW UP IN YOUR NETWORK WINDOW

In a recent update to Windows 10, Microsoft disabled an option called SMB that allows a user to copy files from one device to another over a home network. Watch the video below for step by step instructions on how to re-enable it.

The instructions contained on this page are based on the latest version of Windows 10.
The methods shown here may work with older versions of Windows but will most likely have varying results.
